Target Invasives

Leafy Spurge - Herbaceous, creeping perennial, 6-36" tall. Stems are smooth and often grow in clusters from an extensive deep root system. A white, milky latex is present in all parts of the plant.

Target Invasive Species – Leafy Spurge

Wild Parsnip - Herbaceous plant that establishes as a rosette with upright leaves persisting for at least one year. Plants flower in subsequent years (typically 2nd or 3rd year), but after plants flower, they die (monocarpic perennial). Flowering stems are stout, hallow, grooved, and up to 5' tall.

Common Buckthorn - Tall understory shrub or small tree, 20-25’. Commonly grow in shrub form with many stems sprouting from the same base. Leaf scars are prominent in winter. Cut branch exposes yellow sapwood and orange heartwood. Common buckthorn has brown to silvery bark that is somewhat shiny when young and dark grey to black and scaly when mature. Buds are found in pairs at end of branches, are covered in dark scales, and resemble a hoof. Twigs often end in stout thorns.

Japanese Knotweed - Herbaceous perennial, up to 10’ tall. Hollow, reddish, arching bamboo-like stems are smooth and stout often persisting after plant dies back each year. The base of the stem above each joint is swollen and surrounded by a membranous sheath (ocrea).

Target Invasive Species – Japanese Knotweed

Garlic Mustard Weed - Herbaceous biennial with stems 1–4’ tall as flowering plant. First year plants form a basal rosette that remains green through the winter. Second-year plants produce one to several flowering stems.

Target Invasive Species – Garlic Mustard

Spotted Knapweed - Herbaceous, short-lived perennial in Wisconsin, acting as a biennial elsewhere, 2–4’ tall. Persists as a rosette for 1–4 years before bolting. Flowering plants usually have 1–6 stems, but may have up to 20.
